THE TAURUS SHO PAGE

Updates: Last updated October 24, 2009

The Ford Taurus SHO was introduced in 1989 when the SHO engine was first made available. This was a Yamaha-built 225 HP V6, mated to a standard 5-Speed manual. This was good for a 0-60 mile (0-100 km/h)time at the mid-6 second range , and a quarter mile in the high 14 second range. When introduced, it was the most powerful front-drive car in the world. At the time, its only real competition was the BMW M5, but at more than twice the price the same buyer rarely considered both cars.

The car also got 4 wheel discs, stiffer springs, special body cladding, and most of the Taurus options as standard items.

The car was restyled along with the rest of the line in 1992, and an automatic became available in 1993. When restyled again in 1996, the car got a 235 HP V8 in place of the V6. It also got high precision ZF steering but lost the manual trans option.

Now Ford has reintroduced the 2010 SHO, which has two new features that were not in the earlier cars : Turbo power and AWD. It is also a completely different platform, unfortunately heavier as well. Power is at 347 hp and an automatic is the only choice. The SHO motor is not as exclusive now- this is the EcoBoost engine. Although the SHO name used in the Taurus only, the EcoBoost is available across the Ford range.

This is my 1989 SHO.
